No end to military excesses even after Geneva talks
SL Navy continues to grab civilian land unlawfullySL Navy is extending its barbed wire fences further into lands belonging civilians in Ponnalai and Moolai areas in Jaffna. People in proximity have also accused the Navy of behaving in a threatening manner towards them.
The Navy from the same area has also blocked entrances to paddy fields which is preventing cows from grazing in the fields as they normally do. Also newly blocked by barbed wires are small water ponds from which the cows normally drink water. People have objected to these activities of the Navy and have lodged complaints with the Navy chiefs. SL Navy increases checking in four spots in Jaffna islets SL Navy’s excessive checking at Allaipiddy checkpoint, near Velanai harbour, near Madaththuveli Pillaiyar temple, and near Kurikadduvan harbour is causing the travelers through these places a lot of hardship. People also view these checking as threats rather than any genuine security checks and thus have expressed opposition and frustration towards it. Office of TNA MP Gajendran is permanently rounded up About 20 SLA men and Police have permanently rounded up the office of TNA parliamentarian Gajendran which is located on Palay road at the Jaffna University junction. The SLA mem are standing only 5 Kms from the office all day. Over the past few days there were two other untoward incidents carried out on this office by the SLA. In one incident, Gajendran as well as others who were at the office were treated in an uncivilised manner by the SLA. In another incident, EPDP men brandishing guns arrived at the office with the protection of SLA and threatened people. Auto drivers in Batticaloa threatened by paramilitaries Auto drivers were called into the office of the EPRLF (Varathar group) by Thurairatnam of that group and were threatened that they should not go into LTTE administered areas. At the same time several paramilitaries with guns visited the main auto-stand in Batticaloa and threatened the owners with death if they go to LTTE administered areas. The auto-drivers said that the gunmen game from the PLOTE office. These threats were issued following a discussion between the auto-drivers and the LTTE about the problems faced by the auto-drivers.
