Police, military and courts
Mannar: Mannar Judge, J Pirapaharan, expressed his strong dissatisfaction for the failure of the police and the military chiefs in Mannar to report to the courts as ordered by the Judge.
The case of the Vankalai murder of a family of four on 6 June (massacre-1) was taken up on 16 June at the Mannar District Courts. The Judge had already issued the order for the military and the police chiefs to attend the courts hearing. When the Judge inquired as to why the two chiefs did not appear for the courts he was told by the Police that, “the Police were unable to send the message to the police and military chiefs”. Jaffna: On 13 May, 13 civilians including two children were murdered in Allaipiddy in Jaffna (massacre-2). President Rakapakse appointed a senior Police Officer, Mahesh Perera from Colombo, to conduct the investigation. He in turn appointed a police officer in Jaffna to conduct the investigation. At two consecutive court hearing in Jaffna the Police failed to submit their report citing, “their inability to get witness statements due to the prevailing security situation”. Confidence level: The Bishop of Mannar, Rayappu Joseph said that he does not have even an atom of hope that the victim’s families will receive justice from the Sri Lankan government. He added that those coming to investigate these murders are only coming to create cover-ups for the murders. President and his inquiries: In the meantime President Mahinda Rajapakse has appointed another high level committee to “investigate” the Pesalai killings on 17 June (massacre-3).
