DisplacementMannar: Five hundred Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers entered Sirukandal village and began building a new military camp in land that was used as a cemetery on Monday, 12 June. More than 100 families fled the area, fearing the increased SLA presence.
At the same time, another group of SLA soldiers entered Arrippu village, along the banks of Aruvi river, temporarily displacing around 200 families. The families took refuge in the St Mary’s Church and later returned to their homes. Families remain fearful, and are not leaving their homes due to the intimidating presence of SLA. Injury Jaffna: Thangarasa Muhunthan (41) a senior official the NGO White Pigeon was shot and injured by paramilitary gunmen at his house in Moolai on Monday, 12 June around 7.00 pm. Muhunthan was a former member of the Jaffna Municipal Council. White Pigeon conducts landmine awareness programmes and assists those disabled by landmines by providing them resources to design self-employment projects. Cordon, search and harassment Jaffna: SLA continues to conduct intrusive cordon and search operations, disrupting civilian life and delaying people traveling to and from work. Over the last three days SLA conducted a search operation near Neerveli Kandasamy temple in which the SLA went inside every home and asked in detail about each person there. Residents were frightened by this intimidating activity. Over the past two days a large number of SLA soldiers cordoned off a large area in Udupiddy, preventing anyone from leaving the area except government employees. Many young men were arrested and taken to Udupiddy Girl’s College where they were interrogated. All vehicles passing through Udupiddy were diverted from this area, including government-run buses. Daily checking at the Vallaivali continues to harass people going to and from work. In particular, those who are returning from work have to wait in extremely long queues until they are checked and released.
