New Head of SLMM meets with Tamilselvan
In a familiarisation tour, the new Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Swedish Brigadier Ulf Henricsson visited Kilinochchi today, 27 March 2006 and had a meeting with the LTTE Head of the Political Division, Mr.S.P.Tamilselvan in the Peace Secretariat.
Welcoming the new head of mission who is assuming responsibilities on 1st April, Mr.Tamilselvan assured LTTE’s co-operation and full support to the mission and its activities connected with the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) and its effective implementation. Briefing on the current situation in the context of Geneva talks, Mr.Tamilselvan expressed concern over the non-fulfillment of pledges on the part of the government relative to the activities of para militaries in military occupied areas of the Tamil homeland. On the subject of CFA violations, Mr.Tamilselvan pointed out that the SLMM should not fall prey to the government propaganda relating to underage recruitment and should examine the validity of the allegations vis-à-vis the CFA, for this and the Tamil National Flag hoisting don’t fall within the ambit of the CFA. Elaborating on the flag issue, Mr.Tamilselvan said that the LTTE is not a banned organisation in Sri Lanka and therefore use of its flag which incidentally is the Tamil National flag should not be ruled as a violation of the CFA. Soliciting LTTE’s co-operation to the mission, Brigadier Henricsson said that he will interact with his officials on the ground situation and act promptly on the concerns expressed by Mr.Tamilselvan.
