Two University students killed in front of Jaffna university

On 15 August at 12.30 pm, Sinnaih Sivasankar, a Jaffna university student and Krishnapillai Pratheepan, a student of the Jaffna Technical college were shot and killed in front of the Jaffna university by gunmen on motorbike. A bit of background of these two murdered students reveals the identity of the gunmen.

Sivasankar, one of the victims, was a key figure behind the organization of a Tamil upsurge event on 19 November 2005. He has been beaten by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) after this. He has also received many death threats.

Pratheepan, the other victim, was also one of those severely attacked when SLA entered the International Student Organization building in Jaffna on April 26 and attacked those inside the building.

On May 10th, SLA, again attacked the same building and set fire to the building, damaging equipment worth millions of Rupees. Pratheepan and two others who were inside escaped through the back door. The office of Member of parliament Kajendran is located in the same building and was also affected badly. Kajendran filed a case with the police on 11 May. The case was heard in front of Judge Vignarajah and Pratheepan gave detailed eye witness account on the attack that happened on 10 May.

On 14 August, a University hostel accommodating 15 students was attacked with a grenade. One student, Yasotharan, was seriously injured and is receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching hospital.

On 15 August, the two students, Sivasankar and Pratheepan were shot and killed.
