Vaharai in Batticaloa isolated and bombarded, six month old baby seriously injured
On Monday, 6 November, Sri Lankan Air force conducted two aerial raids on the Vaharai area. This was followed by intense artillery shelling injuring five people, one of them a six months old baby who is in very serious condition.
Vaharai, a tsunami devastated coastal area in the east, has received 50,000 refugees from Trincomalee following Sri Lankan military onslaught on Mutur east and Sampur in September. The situation in Vahari is therefore desperate even if supplies and humanitarian agencies had been permitted. In reality, humanitarian agencies and even SLMM have been barred from the area. Schools children attending classes under trees have no place in this rainy season. It is this Vaharai area that has come under frequent artillery shelling in recent times scattering the already scattered refugees. Monday’s intense artillery shelling and bombing comes following this incessant onslaught on a desperate displaced people. The artillery shells fell near the Palchenai temporary shelter injuring five. Three of the most seriously injured are, six months old baby Suthaharan Vithushalini, Pakiarasa Subashini aged 16 and Pushparasa Pillaiamma aged 41. The six months old baby is in very serious condition requiring immediate medical attention. Yet, Vaharai area has just one Ambulance which went into GoSL area yesterday taking a patient and has not returned. Sri Lankan military is not permitting any other vehicle or people to cross their checkpoint. The six month old baby is therefore not able to receive the immediate medical attention that the baby needs. The shelling of Vaharai area is continuing as this news is written.
