
Harassments of Sri Lankan armed forces continue in the North East
Fishermen in Trincomalee attacked by SL Navy SL Navy came within 200 metres of the coast and attacked fishermen involved in fishing. The incident occurred around 5.30am yesterday 05th of March 2006 between Ilakanthai and Mankerni in the Muthur area which is in the LTTE controlled area.
SL Navy opened fire on the 16 fishermen in 8 fishing boats. Fishermen left their nets and other fishing gear and ran away to safety to the shore. Trincomalee Political Wing Head Elilan has lodged a complaint with the SLMM. 1572 fishing families loose their livelihood due to expanding HSZ The expansion of High Security Zone in Jaffna over the last few weeks has resulted in 1572 fishing families loosing their livelihood. President of fishing consortium for the area has requested the SL Navy chief to permit fishing families to fish in their usual fishing areas. SL Navy has imposed ban on fishing from Senthankulam towards west up to Samilthurai and from Thondamanaru towards east up to Vavettithurai. These bans are clear violation of CFA. Women in Nelliady in fear of SLAFs sexual harassment SLAFs are frequently jumping over the fences and gates of houses during their patrol in Nelliadi. Often they jump over the back fence and peek into toilets and bathrooms which are commonly situated in the backyard. Women and girls are fearful of even going to toilet because of this.
