Children’s education – one cost of displacement
Forty schools in Jaffna east, Kilinochchi north and Mullaithivu have been affected by the large displacements caused by bombing and shelling. Schools are affected in many ways
by the bombing and shelling.

The bombs and shells destroy schools. The photos show one of the larger schools in the northern part of the Kilinochchi district, the Palai Central College destroyed by the shelling on 11 August onwards. When families of children and the school staff are forced to displace, the schools that serve these families stop functioning. The list below has the names of schools in
Poonahari, Palai, and Jaffna east that are not functioning due to displacement. All the displaced families whose children were attending these schools have to be given shelters elsewhere in safer areas. Schools are the only buildings large enough to house the huge refugee numbers. Several schools in the Mullaithivu district (see list below) are not functioning because these schools are housing refugees from the northern parts of Kilinochchi and the eastern parts of Jaffna.
