Europe which has a total population of 800 million is made up of 45 language based nation states. South Asia which has a total population of one billion, (1000 million) is comprised of four states. Who is preventing and therefore benefiting by limiting new nation-states in South Asia?

Mullaitivu civil society questions the international community

Women Development Organizations of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu held a protest march on Monday in Kilinochchi. Large number of protesters that is entirely made up of women marched through the A9 road. They handed our petitions to, the SLMM, NESOHR, and the Government Agent in Kilinochchi. The full text of their petition follows:

“The recent massacres committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces stationed in Northeast raises an important question. Are we, the Tamils, to be killed in the name of peace or live in peace by winning our rights? We are not eager for war, but events are driving us to into war.

The atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces are increasing day by day. There is an undeclared war against the Tamils of Northeast. No Tamil is safe. Sri Lankan armed forces are committing atrocities to terrorize the civilian population. Their aim is to subdue the Tamil people through fear.

- Intellectuals, University students, and young college students are being shot to death.

- Young girls and married women alike are facing molestation and rape by armed forces. When Ilayathami Tharshini, was raped and murdered by Sri Lankan Navy in Punguduthivu, government tried to deflect condemnation saying that she was killed by someone known to her.

- Five civilians, including a watcher of the Jaffna Central College were killed in the Jaffna Fort area. The Sri Lankan army claimed that it killed members of the LTTE.

- In Trincomalee five young students were shot at point blank range. The medical report says that all five boys were shot, but the military spokesman said the boys died when a grenade they were aiming at the army burst in their own hands.

- Sri Lankan armed forces and their paramilitaries have gone to the extent of killing Joseph Pararajasingam MP inside the St. Mary’s Church during the Christmas service. The government of Sri Lanka for a time claimed that the assassination was done by the tigers. The accusation was later dropped because no body was prepared to believe it.

It is a time honored practice in Sri Lanka for its armed forces to kill Tamil civilians and make a claim that they are either terrorist members of the LTTE, or the terrorist LTTE killed the victims. There is no end to this type of killing and story telling.

We make a strong appeal to the international community to take an impartial stand. We do not understand why you are not condemning the armed forces for the violent acts committed against the unarmed ordinary Tamil civilians. We humbly request you to take immediate action. You have the power and the influence to halt the extraordinary danger and calamity the Tamil people are facing.

If you fail in this task an unavoidable war situation will arise. Therefore we the members of the civil society based in Visvamadu, in Mullaitivu district appeal to the international community to intervene on our behalf and enforce justice and fair reply.
