Unabated violence against fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy
Fishermen from Vettilaikerney, Kaddaikadu in Vadamaradchi East were harshly attacked and chased to shore by the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN). The SLN opened fire and physically attacked the fishermen in Vadamaradchi sea when they were fishing in the early morning of 1 August. Due to the threatening situation they left their nets and their catch in the sea and rushed to shore at about 7.00 am.
After this incident, the fishermen went again to the sea to find their nets at about 10.00 am. When they were looking for the nets, the SLN attacked the fishing boats of Sinnathampi Manoranjan and Sellathurai Kanapathippillai. Their boats were severely damaged and can no longer be used for fishing. The Vadamaradchi East fisheries society condemned this brutal act of the SLN against the fishing community. Balasundaram, the General Manager of the fishery society, lodged a complaint with the SLMM and the HRC in Jaffna. Within the month of July there have been more than 10 similar incidents of attacks against fishermen at sea. In addition, the fishing community has faced threats such as the murder of former president of the Point Pedro Fisheries Society Kandaiah Sithravadivel, the disappearance of the President of the Aathikovilady Fisheries Society Rasathurai Inthirarajah on 21 July, and the abduction of the Myliddy Fisheries Society President, Justin Cruz.
