Europe which has a total population of 800 million is made up of 45 language based nation states. South Asia which has a total population of one billion, (1000 million) is comprised of four states. Who is preventing and therefore benefiting by limiting new nation-states in South Asia?

Lofty claims of the GoSL that it is committed to CFA and its pledge in Geneva are all meaningless

-S.P. Tamilselvan

“Lofty claims of the government that it is committed to the CFA and its pledge in Geneva to curb Para-military activities in GoSL controlled areas are all meaningless in the context of what is taking place on the ground”, said Mr. S.P. Tamilselvan in his letter to the Head of the SLMM regarding the killing of Tamil Activist Mr.V. Vigneswaran in Trincomalee.

Full text of the letter is as follows:

It is with a deep sense of shock and sadness that we wish to bring to your immediate attention the killing of Tamil Activist Mr.V. Vigneswaran in Trincomalee today, 7 April 2006.

The shooting of this passive democrat and humanitarian worker has put the entire Tamil Nation into deep grief. Mr.Vigneswaran has been gunned down while entering into the main branch of Bank of Ceylon located in Inner Harbour Road, Trincomalee between the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police and the Harbour Police station. This, no doubt, places the Sri Lankan law enforcing authorities in Trincomalee in bad light and is a pointer to their complicity in the crime. No more can the government and its law enforcing authorities plead ignorance of planned killings of Tamil activists in a systematic manner.

Lofty claims of the government that it is committed to the CFA and its pledge in Geneva to curb Para-military activities in GoSL controlled areas are all meaningless in the context of what is taking place on the ground. Dereliction of the duty by those in charge of law enforcement and crime detection is one thing but their complicity in the crime itself is altogether different. It is this complicity and callous regard for the integrity of the CFA that puts the agreement into grave risk. Government’s professed commitment to the CFA, that too in a post-Geneva scenario is a matter that the SLMM need to take seriously in the light of blatant violation in the killing of Mr.Vigneswaran.
