Travails of recently displaced Tamil civilians

Mannar-Adampan

The entire people from several villages in the Adampan region in the Mannar district have displaced to the Madhu church fearing Sri Lankan military shelling. They are yet to be given relief items. If their situation continues during rainy days the state of these people will become pathetic. Most of these people are farmers who had to abandon their crops. Therefore they are and will be for sometime dependent on relief.

Mannar - Madhu

People from Jaffna came to Mannar for the Madhu church festival from 7th to15th August. The Sri Lankan military closed the borders on 12 August and has kept it closed since. As a result these people from Jaffna are stuck in Madhu. These people have raised their plight with government officials to no avail. They staged a protest in front of the Madhu Divisional Secretariat to draw the attention of the Assistant Government Agent to their plight.

Amparai – Thirukovil

UN organizations from Thirukovil area withdrew their operations following the assassination of UNOPS employee, P Jetley, by paramilitary gunmen on motorbike on 24 August.

Trincomalee - Eechilampathu

LTTE Political Head for Trincomalee, Elilan, said that the Sri Lankan Government is isolating the LTTE administered areas of Mutur east and Eechilampatu from the rest of Trincomalee. It has closed all the roads leading to these areas and has refused permission even to ICRC representatives to go there. People in these two areas are in a desperate plight even for basic food.
