Activities of GoSL operated forces 1-3 June

Shelling and Displacement:

Mannar: On 31 May around 7:30 pm, SLA began shelling from their Vankalai camp in Mannar. Nearly 500 people displaced from their villages near Vankalai. A 12 year old girl and her father (42) were seriously injured by the shelling and were admitted to the Murungan District Hospital. Many of the displaced have sought refuge in the Vankalai St. Anne's Church.

Batticaloa: On I June, SLA shelled the Thanthamalai Muruguan temple in LTTE area of Batticaloa from the Pulukunavai SLA camp, when the temple was crowded with devotees.

Killed

Batticaloa: On 1 June at 9.15 pm, Rasiah Kanesan (56) was killed by a grenade thrown by GoSL operated forces into his home in Puthur in Batticaloa.

On 3 June around 10.00 pm, Vimalendran (34) and Sithiravel (38) were killed by GoSL operated forces, while they were walking home past Karuvakerni Vigneswara Vidhayalam School. The GoSL operated forces emerged from the school grounds and shot the pair dead. The incident took place just 500 metres from the Valaichenai police station.

Mannar: On 3 June at 7.45 pm, Vaithilingam Vijitharan (26), was shot and killed at the Valaichenai bus stand by GoSL operated forces on motorbike. Vijitharan is a government employee in the state run bus service. Peethambaran Mohulan (24) who was with Vijitharan was injured and taken to Valaichenai hospital and later to Baticaloa hospital.

On June 3 around 7.00 pm, Hussain of Uppukulam was shot dead by GoSL operated forces in Mannar town.

Assaulted

Jaffna: On 1 June at 10.30 am SLA assaulted a Hindu priest in the Kaithady-Kopay road in Jaffna. The priest was arrested from a near by Hindu temple. The SLA, frightened of attacks on them have begun to block traffic on roads at will.

Threats in Amparai

LTTE Political Head for Amparai, Jeya, said that threats have been issued to several civilian co-operative managements in Amparai to shut down their services in the villages. Around thousand families were benefiting of the services being offered by the co-operatives, according to a co-operative official in Amparai.

Also threatened were elected local government officials for the Kalmunai Municipal Council. The threats were received by post from the Karuna Group’s office, located in the Lake Road, in the High Security Zone of the Sri Lanka Army in Batticaloa.
