SLA attacks Jaffna bus with passengers
Following a grenade explosion in Kokuvil, Jaffna on Sunday, 2 July, the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) retaliated violently against a passenger bus traveling from Tellipalai. The bus driver, Mylvaganam Kannathasan (23) and bus passengers were assaulted by the SLA soldiers on the bus. Kannathasan was rushed to Jaffna Teaching Hospital with serious injuries.
The Jaffna District Transportation Workers Union, the Main Kondavil Bus Depot, Point Pedro Bus Dept and Karainagar Bus Depot, held a boycott protesting the attack. The union workers submitted an urgent request to the Jaffna Assistant Government Agent (AGA) Sivasamy, that SLA should not travel in passenger buses, an immediate investigation be held into this incident, SLA should assure safety to drivers and bus passengers and buses should not be diverted to accommodate SLA convoy travel. The AGA submitted the urgent request and the SLA stated it will be submitted to SLA Head Quarters. The union workers said they will begin strikes again if these requests are not implemented. Passenger buses in Jaffna have been attacked several times by SLA soldiers in the past. On 1 May a bus conductor and driver were assaulted in the same manner in Allaipiddy. The transportation workers union held a strike following this incident, in which the SLA pledged through the Jaffna AGA that future passenger bus attacks would not be carried out.
