Excerpts from the press conference given by Tamilselvan in Geneva after the unproductive talks:
“We said that we are going to Geneva to notify the world the humanitarian and human rights misery facing our people. We have done this, here at the world centre of humanitarian actions and human rights. In that sense our endevour is a great success. Sadly our appeal has been rejected.”
“We said that we came respecting the call by the international community and putting our hope and trust in them. We did not hold any hope that the Sri Lankan government will be accommodating. Our view has been proved here at the talks. International community should now be able to understand the Sri Lankan government position. The Sri Lankan government is determined to go along the war path. This will bring great misery not just to the Tamil people but to the whole island.” “Both the Tamil and the Sinhala people must come forward to end this brutal path followed by the Sri Lankan government” “I am absolutely confident that the world will understand this soon. They must. They must take a firm decision on this soon. There is no other way but for the world to take great efforts to bring the chauvinistic elements in the Sinhala polity inline.” “Norway has said that there will be no offensives. But we have brought to their notice military offensives launched when we were here sitting at the table talking. Yet, no constructive measures have been taken regarding that.” “Sri Lankan government is going to bring another genocidal war on our people after stopping the work of the SLMM on some false pretext. Our people will wage the struggle to free themselves under our leader’s direction. Diaspora Tamils will help on a scale never seen before because although we submitted evidence of the misery facing our people at this world centre for human rights, we were humiliated and ignored. Our people are hurt.” “The Sri Lankan government, to assist its genocidal activities against the Tamils, has frozen the funds of the TRO which coordinates the assistance given by the Diaspora Tamils and thus weakened the TRO.” “Our leader’s annual speech is something many people look forward to. I believe our leaders forthcoming annual speech will comment on, the brutal activities of the Sri Lankan government, the approach adopted by the international community regarding this and the actions that must be taken by our people.”
