GoSL bans cement, iron rods, restricts fuel
Sri Lankan defense authorities have banned the transportation of cement and iron rods to LTTE areas in violation of the CFA. Government Agents (GAs) of the relevant districts have been informed. Restrictions are in force on the amount of fuel taken into LTTE areas.
Construction work already underway have come to a halt as a result on the ban of building material. Fishermen are facing problems because they can not operate their boats without fuel.
Lorry loads of cement bags are stuck at the Omanthai checkpoint awaiting orders from the Defense Ministry.
A similar ban is also implemented across the Kaddaparichchan checkpoint in Trincomalee. Cement and iron rods have been banned from being taken across this checkpoint last year for the entire year. Fuel has been restricted and could be taken only with special permission from Sri Lankan armed forces (SLAFs). Travelers who cross to GoSL controlled areas and bring fuel in small cans are stopped at the Omanthai checkpoint by the SLAFs and the cans of fuel are poured out on the ground. This kind of callous behaviour by the SLAFs towards private citizens attempting to take one or two litres of fuel exposes the SLAFs’ approach to civilian welfare.
