
October first fortnight news from Northeast
INGO status in the Northeast: ICRC office in Jaffna attacked: A grenade was exploded in front of the Jaffna office of the ICRC. ICRC issued a report on the incident. No one was hurt and the office was slightly damaged.
MSF doctors expelled from Manthikai hospital:
Four MSF doctors including a child specialist were expelled from the Manthikai hospital in Jaffna. The area where the hospital is located was recently declared a militarized zone. Four INGOs in Northeast expelled by GoSL:
The visa for 40 expatriates working for four INGOs functioning in the Northeast, were cancelled by the GoSL. The charges are that these INGOs are encouraging the LTTE activities such as the health service of the LTTE. NGOs to be called in front of parliament select committe:
President of the parliament select committee appointed to investigate activities of the NGOs said that the NGOs suspected of working against the national interest will be called before the select committee for inquiry. It is worth noting that the president, Wijitha Heart, represents JVP in the select committee. Illegal brewers assisted by SLA in Jaffna MPCS (Multi Purpose Cooperative Society) are the retail outlets through which basic groceries are distributed to the public. At a time when the supply of these basic items are in short supply in Jaffna, due to the closure of the Muhamalai border by the Sri Lankan Army, several MPCS shops have been broken into by thieves. The latest trend in such thefts is to steal sugar for illegal brewing of alchohol. MPCS shops in Tellipalai, Alaveddi, Mallaham, Nallur, Jaffna, and Nirveli have been recently broken into and sugar bags stolen. People suspect collusion between the illegal brewers and the Sri Lankan Army. Three civilians killed by SLA shelling In the first two weeks of October three civilians were killed by artillery shells fired by the Sri Lankan Army. Two civilians were killed on 6 October in Pannichchakerni during the three pronged attack by the Sri Lankan military. On 12 October a 64 year old woman, Kandaih Sinnathankam was killed in Kodikamam by an artillery shell fired by the Sri Lankan military. Teacher shot dead in front of students A school teacher, Thirunavukkarasu Sivagnanaselvam, was shot and killed in front of his class in Saraswathy Vidhyalayam school in Kinniyadi in Batticaloa on 11 October. Prior to the shooting the teacher was called to the Sri Lankan military camp for inquiry. Abductions by paramilitary More than 34 youths between the ages of 16 to 25 are said to have been abducted by the Karuna paramilitary group in Thirukovil in Amparai on 11 and 12 October. Parents protested in front of the paramilitary office located near the Akkaraipatru 40th Milepost Sri Lankan military camp.
