MPCS food stock stolenSix MPCS offices, that are retail outlets for subsidized food items, have been broken into in Jaffna and the stocks have been stolen during curfew hours. The outlets that were broken into are in, Usan, Vidaththatpalai, Ketpali, Mirusuvil north, Varani, Idaikurichchi,and Manthuvil.
Theft in houses in Jaffna Theft of private homes during curfew hours continues in Jaffna. On 2 October, five houses near Katpaha Pillaiyar temple near Jaffna town were broken into and property was stolen. The thieves stole cash and jewels at gunpoint. In Elalai, a 75 years old female retired teacher was beaten and killed by the thieves. Sri Lankan Navy has also begun stealing livestock from people of the islets off Jaffna coast after preventing the people from taking their livestock with them when they displace. Allaipiddy disappearance Five people of Allaipiddy who were displaced from Allaipiddy since 10 August, went back in a truck to collect their property on 24 September. They have been missing since. Schools remain closed Ignoring the order by President Rajapakse, students and teachers continued to boycott school due to the terror filled atmosphere in Jaffna. The president of the Teachers Association said, “Students cannot go to school in the present atmosphere. Students are frightened even to walk the streets. Many students are using the time to wait in long queues to by food for their families. Since the Muhamai and Omanthai checkpoints are closed, teachers are also unable to report to work in their schools.” Madduvil displaced seek protection Many people from Madduvil who displaced from their homes following threats from the SLA have sought protection from the Jaffna branch of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission. One couple fled earlier abandoning their six children aged 7 to 11 due to threats from SLA. The children were later placed in a children’s home by the Jaffna branch of the Sri Lanka human rights commission. The parents were among those who have sought protection to go back to their homes.
