SLA shells civilian area in Mutur, Trincomalee

On Thursday, 15 June Sri Lankan army shelled civilian areas in Mutur in LTTE area in Trincomalee, wounding three civilians and damaging at least ten homes. SLA resumed the artillery fire on Friday, 16 June as well. SLMM monitors visited the site with LTTE Political Head for Trincomalee, Elilan.

Six killed

Trincomalee: Three civilians were shot and killed by SLA soldiers on Friday, 16 June in Periyakulam. The civilians work for a construction site and were found shot dead inside their vehicle. A civilian from Thatchanur who went to graze his cows in the GoSL controlled area was shot dead by SLA soldiers on 16 June. Jaffna: The dead body of Sri Ravindrarajah Thineswaran (16) was found with gunshot wounds in Muhamalai and identified by his mother at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on 17 June. Thineswaran, from Point Pedro, had been missing for two weeks. His mother filed complaints with SLMM and the Jaffna Human Rights Commission office at the time of his disappearance.

Batticaloa: Kathamuthu Rajanayagam (48) a mentally ill man was shot and killed in Santhiveli by SLA soldiers when he failed to stop riding his bicycle after SLA soldiers ordered him to stop on 17 June. Rajanayagam is a father of three.

LTTE averts Sri Lankan DPU attack

On Friday, 16 June LTTE members averted a Sri Lankan Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) attack close to the Batticaloa lagoon. The Sri Lankan DPU soldiers fled LTTE area of lluppadichenai after a claymore attack on Thursday, 15 June in which no one was injured.

Two DPU soldiers were then hiding in the Pankudaveli jungle, near Batticaloa lagoon. Another two DPU soldiers, sent on a rescue mission for the DPU soldiers in hiding, traveled across the lagoon from Eravur towards Pankudaveli jungle. LTTE members intercepted the SLA rescue team, killed one soldier and captured the other, as reported by Batticaloa District Political Head Daya Mohan. Daya Mohan said search operations are being conducted to locate the two DPU soldiers in hiding.
