Sri Lankan Navy slaughter to cower down civilians

Nine occupants of one home were slaughtered by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel on 13 May, around 8.30 pm. The incident occurred in Allaipiddy, an islet off the coast of Jaffna. Villagers said that they can identify the Navy personnel who carried out the slaughter.

The home belonged to a wealthy family in Allaipiddy and it was a two story imposing home. Sri Lankan Navy has been demanding the family to hand over the home to them for their own use. The slaughter is seen as a punishment to the family and a warning to others for not yielding to the demand of the Sri Lankan Navy.

Eight members of the family died on the spot. Three were rushed to the hospital. One of them died there. Among the dead is four months old baby, Ketheeswaran Yathursan and four year old child, Ketheeswaran Thanushkanth.

The names of the others killed are, Palachamy Ketheeswaran (25), Ketheeswaran Anex Ester (23), Abraham Robinson (28) father of three, Sellathurai Amalathas (28) father of one, Kanesh Navaratnam (50) father of four, Joseph Anthonymuttu (64) father of five and Sinnathurai Sivanesan (46).

S Mohanambikai (46) T Sellathurai (61) were seriously injured in the shooting.

Terrorized people of Allaipiddy have displaced to the Allaipiddy church.

On the same night another family was slaughtered by paramilitary in another islet, Velanai, off Jaffna coast. The victims are M Shanmugalingam (62), his son S Kantharoopan (29) and Kantharoopan’s wife. The owner of this home runs a communication centre which was also broken by the attacking paramilitary. After this slaughter the attackers also destroyed 10 shops located at the nearby junction. A tea shop was also destroyed and its owner was also found dead.
