“We went for fishing about 10.00 pm on 17th January after obtaining permission as usual from the SLN sentry point, located at along the beach. Six of us went on 3 boats and anchored the boats to spread the net. We had lit the lamps in each boat according to the orders of the SLN. As we finished spreading the nets around 1.00 am SLN boats came towards us.
They hit our boats with their boats and damaged them. Then they pulled us into their boats and attacked us with iron pipes and clubs. As they assaulted us theu repeatedly said, “Are you helping LTTE when we are dying?” Both arms Somu Ulakeswaramurthy’s were broken and Veluppillai Rajaratnam’s one arm and a leg were broken in the SLN attack. They continued to attack us for more than half an hour and also damaged our nets. Then we were left in our boats. We were unable to bring ourselves ashore for more than five hours due to the pain we were suffering. Finally, we managed to drive our boats to the shore”.
