Emergency Regulation, Violence against civilians, and peace talks
TNA protest ignored by international mediaGoSL yesterday extended the Emergency Regulation that has been condemned by the UN and Amnesty International at various times as violating many international human rights standards. The extension yesterday was boycotted by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which staged a protest in front of parliament. TNA represents more than 80% of the Northeast population.
International media which reported the extension of Emergency Regulation, yet again, ignored TNA boycott and protest. Why is the international media remaining blind to this stark reality? Tamil civilian life less worthy than Sri Lankan soldier’s life The report submitted to Japanese envoy Yasushi Akashi by S P Tamilselvan at their meeting on 9 May stated, “A total of 12 civilians were killed on February 27, March 5, 6, 9, 20, 22, 24, 25, and 28 and then on April 7 Tamil activist, Vigneswaran, was killed. The first attack on SLAFs posts after the Geneva talks took place on April 8th…”. Some international media reports yesterday said that, “diplomats say Tigers kick started the recent violence…”. For anyone to draw this conclusion, in view of the sequence of attacks listed above, there can only be one reason. The deaths of the 12 Tamil civilians including that of Mamanithar Vigneswaran, has not registered in the minds of those who drew this conclusion. Tamil civilians’ lives is not as worthy in their minds as the lives of Sri Lankan soldiers. Is this not one of the basic causes of the conflict in this island? Two sides appeal to international community LTTE Political Head appealed to international community to make the GoSL stop the killing of Tamil civilians and ease the travel restrictions on their members in order to create a conducive environment for peace talks. GoSL on the other hand is asking countries to ban the LTTE and place a curb on LTTE fund raising. Who is sincere about peace talks here? SLA activities in the Northeast on 9 May 2006 In Jaffna, two hairdressing saloon owners in separate locations were abducted in the same white-van at gunpoint by paramilitary on 9 May. In Amparai, Kurukulan Ruban (18) was shot dead at day light on 8 May in Vinayapuram in Amparai by helmeted motorbike riders. Jaffna at standstill as protests continue against the violence by Sri Lankan armed forces and its paramilitary against civilians. All government departments except essential services remained closed.
