
GoSL initiates offensive in two fronts, more civilian displacement
The Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) launched a two front offensive in Jaffna district and Batticaloa district on Friday, 11 August causing hundreds of civilians to displace in addition to the thousands displacing from Trincomalee over the last week.
Jaffna civilians Civilians from Muhamalai and Pallai are fleeing to Kilinochchi as the GoSL began attacks from the SLA camp in Muhamalai on Friday around 2.00 pm. Civilians displacing from these areas stated that they heard shelling coming from SLA camps located near their homes, which has also targeted civilian areas. Civilians who have left these areas said other civilians were wounded by the SLA shelling, four of which were treated at Kilinochchi hospital on Friday night. Three of the four injured were three children, Mendis Vimalraj (15), Navaratnam Sharmila (11) and Mini (4). Other civilians are displacing from SLA shelling-affected areas of Pachchilaipalli and Vadamaradchi East. Batticaloa civilians Earlier on Friday around 1.00 pm, the GoSL carried out aerial bombardments in civilian areas of Tharavai, Miankulam and Iralakulam. Residents stated homes were damaged and surrounding forests were on fire. Civilians of these villages began fleeing as four sets of bombs were dropped.
