Is international media assisting Sri Lankan military spin doctoring?

On 21st September three bodies of young men who went missing earlier were found on the border of a Sri Lankan military high security zone. The men went missing on their way to the market carting items on a motorbike.

Their names are, Thavakumar (27), Kartheeswaran (30) and Kumarakulasingam (47).

When families inquired from the Tellipalai military chief he told the families that the three men were arrested for inquiry. He told the family to go to the military camp in Alaveddi for their release.

It was after this the bodies of the men were recovered at the border to the military high security zone.

People suspect that these men were killed as revenge for attack on the military a few days earlier when two military soldiers were killed.

There have been international out cry about the blackout of Jaffna behind which disappearances and killings are going uncontrolled. Sri Lankan military and its paramilitaries are behind this is an open truth in Jaffna.

The military as usual tries its spin doctoring. What is tragic is that the international media could be assisting the Sri Lankan military in its spin doctoring.

Associated Press in its report chooses to quote the military which killed the three men as follows,

“ Associated Press, Fri September 22, 2006 02:38 EDT . BHARATHA MALLAWARACHI - Associated Press Writer - COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - (AP) -

…..In the northern Jaffna peninsula on Thursday, soldiers on foot patrol found the bodies of three civilians, all ethnic Tamils, with gunshot wounds, the officer said.

The officer said the motive behind the killings and the identity of the assailants were not immediately known.”

How are Jaffna people and the families of the victims expected to read this news by Associated Press?

Aren’t news reports supposed to seek truth as much as possible?
