SLAFs Chief in Jaffna informs SLAFs position in Jaffna
Major Gen Chandrasri, the chief of SLAFs in Jaffna, met Civilian Organizations in Jaffna on Tuesday afternoon. Chandrasri informed the people of the position of SLAFs in Jaffna. The news report issued by those who met Chandrasri lists the following as matters that were discussed including response by Chandrasri.
Chandrasri has said that SLAFs cannot give permission immediately to people to continue their fishing activities and it is not possible to remove SLA men positioned along streets. Following are the main points in the news report that was issued: - Fishing has been banned in Vadamaradchchi and Valigamam west. More than 2000 families have lost their livelihood as a result. Given that CFA requires an end to ban on fishing these fishermen must be allowed to earn their livelihood. Chandrasri said that the conditions are still not right for the removal of ban and the fishermen will be given welfare instead.
- People asked for the removal of SLA men stationed along streets. Chandrasri responded that it is not possible to do that at this stage.
- Chandrasri was told that FDL lines have been brought forward by 600 metres in places which is against the CFA. Chandrasri responded that this is a matter of national security and he cannot do anything about it immediately.
- Chandrasri was told that the fences cut down by SLA in Chavakachcheri-Kachchai road must be repaired by the SLA. Chandrsri responded that the local government official in the area must contact 521 Division chief and make the request.
- Chandrasri was told about the barbed wires being put in Ponnalai area. He was shown the complaint lodged with the GA of Valigamam south. Chandrasri promised to look into it.
- Chandrasri was told of the delays and harassments faced by travelers from islets including government servants and teachers. Chandrasri promised to look into it.
- Chandrasri did not respond to complaints that were lodged about chopping large number of trees by the SLA.
- The matter of stones being excavated along the Maviddapuram-Keerimalai road and the danger it posed to underground water supply was raised. Chandrasri responded saying that this is unavoidable because the runway of the Palaly military airport needed to be upgraded.
- The road in front of the Varani camp cannot be opened for security reasons said Chandrasri.
- Chandrasri said that traffic police will operate in front of schools.
