GoSL controlled Muthur-Trincomalee under paramilitary reign
The GoSL controlled area of Muthur town in Trincomalee is adjacent to the Muthur jetty. This used to be an area populated by both Tamils and Muslims until a few years ago. Land grab by Muslims a few decades ago and more recently the violence perpetrated by the SLA and its paramilitaries has emptied this part of Muthur of most Tamils.
Recently the intense activities of the paramilitary groups in this area have raised the concerns of many. Paramilitary groups, Jihath, Karuna and ENDLF are visible and active. A Tamil paper Thamil-Alai, printed at great cost in colour is distributed free among the Tamils and Muslims by paramilitary that goes around in three-wheelers. The funding for this can only come from the GoSL. As well as distributing the paper, the paramilitary are threatening Tamils and Muslims to attend their meetings and warn death if they do not. Muslim people are also frustrated by the activities of the paramilitary. In the meantime SLA shelled the LTTE’s Muthur FDL adjacent to the above area for 30 minutes from 11.45 pm on Tuesday night. Tsunami reconstruction stalled – Batticaloa government agent The Batticaloa Government Agent, K Mahes, stated on Wednesday, 21 June that due to hurdles created by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA), most of the tsunami reconstruction work has come to a halt. Many international aid agencies and aid workers who were involved in the construction have left due to this holdup of materials. Mahes stated, “Due to bans on many building materials, such as cement and iron rods, for tsunami reconstruction in Vaharai, an LTTE area, the construction has come to a halt. SLA is citing security reasons for banning these items.” “Another reason that the construction companies and aid workers are leaving is the severe checking of every single item being taken into LTTE, which has caused tsunami re-building projects to be discontinued or delayed.”
