Civilians subjected to severe SLA checking and harassment
Civilians throughout Jaffna have recently been subjected to assault, severe interrogation, death threats, excessive checking and harassment by the SLA.
Recently civilians are being taken by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) intelligence personnel and being interrogated and threatened with death at their camp in Achchalu in Punalaikadduvan. Young men traveling to work are being stopped and attacked by members of EPDP who are staying at the SLA camps in Kanakampuliadi in Chavakachcheri, which is near the Chavakachcheri high security zone. Over the last few days, several young men who were traveling in buses and three-wheelers were made to get off the vehicles, attacked in the middle of the road and then dragged to EPDP camps. The SLA stationed in the islets off the Jaffna peninsula are harassing businessmen who carry their stock to their shops. If medicine or batteries are in the stock that businessmen are carrying, then they are subjected to severe interrogation. The SLA is also collecting information about people who have displaced from this area recently due to fear. The SLA apparently warned the remaining residents that if those displaced people ever come back, strong action will be taken against them.
