Full report of the SLA advance from Mahinthapuram camp on 9 December
At 5.00am on Saturday morning, SLA from the Mahinthapuram camp broke the LTTE Forward Defense Line and moved up to Eechchilapatru. The SLA move was supported by artillery shelling and Multi Barrel Fire from Kallaru SLA camp. Tanks moved from this camp to support the SLA offensive.
In the battle that lasted for several hours 30 SLA soldiers including two senior officers, were killed. Five bodies of SLA soldiers have been captured by the LTTE. Some weapons were also captured. The retreating SLA fired artillery into refugee camps in Patchchenai and Pammivedduvan. Initially only an estimate of civilian casualties could be obtained because no one was able to reach the area due to continuous SLA artillery fire. LTTE fired back at the Mahinthapuram SLA camp and succeeded in neutralizing the SLA artillery fire. It was only after this the area could be reached to gauge the full casualty statistics. Fifteen civilians were killed in the artillery fire and more than 35 were injured. Vaharai hospital sources contacted the Ministry of Defense (MoD) through the ICRC to take the seriously injured to Valaichenai hospital. MoD has refused land access and suggested taking the injured patients by sea. However, medical sources are concerned that sea is presently too rough and not suitable for taking badly injured people.
