District Medical Officer for Kilinochchi appeals

The District Medical Officer (DMO) for Kilinochchi, Dr Sathanandan, appealed to local and international organizations for help to keep the main hospital in Kilinochchi running. He said that fuel for electricity generation for the hospital, and medicines allocated for the third quarter of the year have not been allowed to pass the Omanathan checkpoint of the Sri Lankan military.

All electricity requirements for Kilinochchi are generated using fuel. Fuel ban imposed by the military has ceased the main electricity supply. The hospital runs its own generator. Even the fuel for the hospital need has not been permitted said Dr Sathanandan.

Dr Sathanandan said that the Kilinochchi hospital requires 210 litres of fuel daily for electricity generation. Due to shortages the usage was economized to 160 litres per day. Since the fuel stock is now getting exhausted, the hospital is facing the danger of having to halt all surgeries.

Dr Sathanandan also said that since the third quarter medicine allocation has not arrived, the hospital is unable to treat even ordinary illnesses like cut injuries, diabetes and epilepsy.

Mullaithivu DMO also appeals

At the same time, DMO for the Mullaithivu district, Dr Jeyakularaja, also appealed for the easing of the unofficial economic blockade imposed by the Sri Lankan military. He said that the blockade on milk powder has put babies and toddlers at risk of not getting their daily milk. He said that all appeals to the government departments have so far failed to rectify the situation.
