LTTE Political Head meets UNCEF and SCF

A meeting between Ms JoAnna van Gerpen (Head of UNICEF), Mr Richard Mawer (Head Save the Children Fund-SCF), and Mr S P Tamilselvan (LTTE Political Head), the LTTE Child Protection Unit was held at the LTTE Peace Secretariat on Wednesday 31 May morning.

On the agenda were discussions about the protection of children in view of the large number of children who have been killed recently in GoSL controlled areas.

Tamilselvan expressed the LTTE’s concern for the welfare of the children and said that the LTTE is as keen as the UNICEF and the SCF in the welfare of the children.

A list of names of children killed, disappeared and injured during the CFA period in GoSL areas was handed to UNICEF and SCF and the two international agencies were asked to take appropriate actions to safe guard children from becoming victims in the future.

UNICEF and SCF expressed concern for the attacks on their offices. LTTE brought to their attention that throughout the two decades of war and during CFA none of the international agencies were ever, attacked by the LTTE. LTTE said that they will ensure 100%, the safety of the international agencies working in their areas.

Also at the meeting were, Mr Thaigaraja, member of the Child Protection Unit and Head of the LTTE Liaison Office for international agencies. Mr S Puleedevan, Secretary General of the LTTE Peace Secretariat was also at the meeting as well as the other members of the CPU.

Among the UNICEF, SCF team was Ms Penny Brune, of UNICEF branch in Kilinochchi.

Family of six blown to pieces, surviving members unable to hold funeral

At 6.45am SLA fired artillery blew up a family of six, father, mother and four children, to pieces in Red-Barna in Visuvamadu. The four children killed in the family are aged from one to sixteen. Three more IDPs, two of them children aged 10 and 14, were also killed by this shelling incident.

Widespread shelling in Vanni including Theravil and Kaiveli kills entire families

SLA shelling on 16 January at 1.30pm on the IDP settlement in Theravil in Mullaithivu District killed a family of three leaving the one and half year old baby who was also injured with no one to care for him. The baby is receiving treatment at the Puthukudiyiruppu hospital.

A striking feature of the IDP population that has just moved from Tharmapuram to Theravil are the large number of children among them. Babies in mothers’ arms, dawdling toddlers, young children eating raw mangoes, boys playing marbles or digging bunkers, girls playing hopscotch or caring for younger siblings, they are the ones filling the place.
