Longstanding Jaffna city main bus stand forcefully shifted by Sri Lankan military
The military shifted the longstanding Jaffna city bus stand using threats in an unplanned and unannounced manner.
The military simply announced the shifting of the main bus stand through the media. There was neither consultation with nor sharing of information with the Jaffna city council that administers the bus stand. The decision to shift and implement that decision using threats was unilaterally taken by the occupying military. The new location of the main bus stand in the open grounds near the city is totally inadequate for the busy main bus stand. This land is neither asphalted nor flat enough for driving buses. Sri Lankan military appeared in large numbers at the main bus stand yesterday and enforced the shift. Military has now prevented all vehicles entering the city except bicycles. Earlier the Government Agent of Jaffna has lamented the inability to clear rubbish from the city to its dumping site because the military had closed access to the dumping site.
