
Past patterns of State violence returns
Following a bomb explosion on Central Road in Trincomalee town on Wednesday at 4:00 pm, rioters with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Army and Sri Lankan Navy began burning shops owned by Tamils with explosives. Nine people have been killed and more than 40 people are injured.
Tamil Member of Parliament of Trincomalee District, Mr Thurairatnasingam reported that six shops owned by Tamils have been burned down. Due to the mayhem in Trincomalee town, residents in the area are fleeing for their safety. Police have set an indefinite curfew for the area. The new Head of SLMM, Ulf Henricsson, arrived in Trincomalee earlier today and is evaluating the chaotic situation.
