The September fortnight of surfacing bodies, killings and disappearances
During the first two weeks of September, the local Tamil dailies in the Northeast were filled with stories of white van abductions, missing people surfacing as bodies a few days later and point blank shooting and killing by death squads. The scene is worst in Jaffna which is blocked out and blacked out by the GoSL. In spite of this haunting atmosphere, especially in Jaffna, the international media remains blind to the fact.

In order to shoot and kill Sivaprakasam Thayaparan, the killers did not hesitate to also shoot and kill his 2 year daughter, Thayajothi Thayaparan on 13 September in Valvettithurai in Jaffna. Two girls,Tharshika and Valarmathy, were arrested on the road by the Sri Lankan military. They were later brought to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital on 11 September. Tharshika was dead and Valarmathy allegedly with cyanide poisoning. The medical report however, did not show cyanide poisoning in Valarmathy’s blood. Valarmathy has no idea how her friend Tharshika died. Is the Jaffna hospital staff also caught up in the haunting atmosphere too afraid to speak out? The bar chart and graph above tells part of this ghastly story through numbers. Young men in their prime with very young dependent children are being picked for elimination with such abandonment. The PDF file gives, in a list format, brief descriptions of the incidents that are creating the deadly atmosphere in Northeast, especially in Jaffna.
