
Fears of missing TRO staff increase as another five disappear
Five TRO staff were abducted near the Welikanda SLA checkpoint and another group of five TRO staff have disappeared with their vehicle within the last two days.
Among the ten disappeared, four are women. Paramilitaries operating in Batticaloa district are suspected in both incidents.

Information about the first group abducted was released on Tuesday morning. The information about the second group that disappeared was released on Tuesday night.According to yesterday’s reports, five of fifteen staff members were abducted by gunmen who came in a white van at the Welikanda SLA checkpoint in Polunnaruwa and forced the TRO staff members out of their vehicle. The gunmen blindfolded the TRO staff and forced them into the white van. The remaining ten TRO staff, who were not abducted, were threatened with death with a warning that they should not contact anyone about this incident. This information was released four hours after the incident. Another five TRO staff members traveling from Batticaloa district to Kilinochchi were reported missing on Tuesday night. According to report, the second group of five who disappeared were traveling from Batticaloa district for a meeting in Kilinochchi, which was held on the Tuesday morning. The Kilinochchi TRO office informed the Colombo TRO that the staff did not attend the meeting on Tuesday morning. The group of five staff left Batticaloa for the meeting on Sunday, 29 January around 7:00 pm and no one has heard from them since.
