Japanese envoy meets Political Head

Japanese envoy Yasushi Akashi met with LTTE Political Head, S P Tamilselvan, in Kilinochchi, on 9 May.

Speaking to the media following the meeting, Mr Akashi said that he is taking a message to the GoSL from the LTTE leader delivered to him by the Political Head. He said he is not in a position to divulge the message to the media.

S P Tamilselvan, the Political Head, speaking separately to the media after the meeting, said that he explained in detail to Mr Akashi, accompanied by a report, about the war like attack by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces (SLAFs) that has killed and is continuing to kill hundreds of Tamil young men and women.

Tamilselvan said that he has informed Mr Akashi that it is in the hands of the international community to bring an end to this war like attack by the SLAFs and create a more conducive environment for peace talks.

Tamilselvan added that he had informed the Japanese envoy that the Tamil people by these attacks and repression of their normal life will forced to take a decision that will bring doom to the Sri Lanka. He said that international community must then understand the background in which the Tamils would have been forced to take such a decision.

Japanese ambassador Akio Suda also accompanied the Japaneese envoy. With the Political Head, LTTE Police Head Mr. Nadeson also attended the meeting.

Tamilselvan handed over to the Japanese envoy the latest report of the statistics on Tamil civilian casualties at the hands of the Sri Lankan armed forces (SLAFs). The report was an updated version of the one released on 26 April, when the Tamil civilian death toll at the hands of SLAFs since the February Geneva talks stood at 103. In the updated statistics this figure is 148. In the intervening 12 days, 45 more Tamil civilians were slain by the SLAFs.

The updated report can be down loaded from here.
