Last of the three detained Sri Lankan police released by the LTTE
Heeding to the request made by the departing Head of Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission, Ulf Henricsson, to release the third Sri Lankan policeman detained by the LTTE, the LTTE leadership released the policeman this morning of 26 August 2006. The policeman was handed to the Sri Lankan monitoring mission delegation that departed Kilinochchi after a two day visit.
The LTTE arrested the three policeman in October 2005 for trespassing into the LTTE area without due authority. Although the three policemen maintained that they entered the area by mistake there were inconsistencies in their statement which lead to their arrest. They were charged at the Tamileelam courts. Two of the policeman were released earlier on humanitarian basis and the last of the three policeman was released today. The decision to release the policeman, B W Bopetigoda, was made by the LTTE leadership as a mark of good will towards the departing Head of the Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission. There are many young Tamils who are being detained for long periods by the Sri Lankan Government. These young Tamil men and women are languishing in prisons far away from their families. Hope has been expressed that the departing Head of Mission will also be able to extract a similar good will gesture from Sri Lankan Government to release these young Tamil men and women.
