
LTTE counter-attacks SLA ambush, 12 SLA killed
Nearly 100 Sri Lanka army (SLA) soldiers entered the LTTE area of Vahaneri, Batticaloa on Thursday, 14 July and killed four LTTE members. Following this incident, the LTTE counter-attacked the SLA around 6.00 am and killed 12 SLA soldiers. The confrontation lasted for about one hour.
The SLA soldiers from the 23-2 Brigade advanced 5 kilometres into the LTTE area of Kulathumadu from the SLA camp in the Valaichenai Paper Factory. In the counter-attack 12 SLA soldiers were killed and one was captured. As the SLA withdrew from the site, SLA camps of Miyankulam, Karadikulam and Valaichenai Paper Factory fired mortar and artillery shells. Civilians in the surrounding areas displaced to Pendukalsenai. Following the attack, SLMM monitors visited the site of the attack where the bodies of the killed SLA were left. The bodies of the SLA soldiers are to be handed over with the facilitation of the SLMM and ICRC. In separate ambush attack by the SLA on Wednesday, 12 July in Kadawanaikulam, Trincomalee, four LTTE members were killed. The LTTE members killed were Lt. Colonel Easan, Captain Theepan, Captain Thanushan and Veeravengai Karuna.
