How displacement disrupts education

‘78 schools in the Northeast remain closed when schools reopened after the August holidays’ – Director Education for Northeast Mr Latheep.

According to UN High Commission for refugees more 200,000 people have been displaced in the Northeast this year due to aerial bombing, shelling, and fear of military attacks. Among the 200,000 displaced at least half, that is 100,000 are school going children. These children also have the right to education. But is anyone really in a position to be concerned about their education when even the more basic needs like food and a place to sleep cannot been met adequately.

Where can the displaced people stay in the places where they are displacing to? Invariably schools are the only available building where the large numbers of people can be accommodated. Therefore, when large number of people displace, not only the displacing children loose out on their education but the children in the receiving communities where the refugees are displacing to are also loosing out on their education. This is the multiplying effect of displacement on the education of children.

There are other causes disrupting the schools. Among the displaced are school principals and teachers. Local papers carry notices calling on the displaced school teachers to report at various locations so that some arrangement can be made for reorganizing the schools in temporary locations.
