Body of SLA soldier killed in LTTE area handed over to SLA
The body of the SLA soldier killed in a gun battle in Nedunkerni in the LTTE area in Vavuniya, on 13 June, was handed over to the ICRC in the presence of SLMM at the Puliyankulam-Omanthai border area. ICRC handed the body to SLA. This is the first time GoSL has accepted that its forces are operating in LTTE areas, albeit indirectly by accepting the body.
The handing over took place on 15 June at the request of the SLA’s Vanni High Command. The SLA soldier was killed by the LTTE when he and his team attempted to lay claymore mines in the LTTE area. It must be noted here that when this gunbattle was first reported on 13 June by the international media (e.g. AP report by Krishnan Francis of 13 June) it said, “However, military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe accused the rebels of fabricating the incident and falsely accusing the soldiers of bearing arms in rebel territory - a violation of a 2002 cease-fire agreement.” AP also quoted the SLA spokesperson Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe saying, "This is totally fabricated. We totally deny that armed soldiers were in the rebel-held village.”
