Tamils deal with the aftermath of Sri Lankan aerial bombing and shelling

Yesterday, three recent Sri Lankan aerial bombing and shelling incidents that killed many civilians filled the Tamil psyche. Most Tamils who have lived through the two decades of bombing and shelling dealt with the latest incidents as they have always done. They erected memorials, they mourned en mass and hoped for the eviction of the foreign military from their soil.

In the latest such incident, Sri Lankan military from the Mankerni camp in Batticaloa fired artillery shells into Vaharai area injuring three people from the same family as artillery shells fell on their home. The high intensity shelling towards Vaharai is tormenting the people among whom are 50,000 IDPs displaced from Mutur east when Sri Lankan military occupied this area.

In another incident three days earlier, Sri Lankan Kfirs dropped bombs in Puthukkudiyiruppu killing three children. One of the children, a young child, who went into a coma due to the shock of the bomb blast died later in the hospital. Mother of one of the three dead children, who sustained head injuries, was admitted to the Kilinochchi hospital. Thavarasa Indra (44) succumbed to her head injuries and died in Kilinochchi hospital on 20 October.

As these two events filled the Tamil psyche, the Visuvamadu Mahavidhyalaym in Mullaithivu opened a memorial they have built in the school in memory of the 11 school girls from their school who were among the 53 students who died in the Senchcolai complex bombing on 14 August.
