Trincomalee Tamil Community Leader, Vigneswaran, shot deadPresident of the Tamil People’s Forum for Trincomalee district, Mr V Vigneswaran, was shot dead on Friday, 7 April in front of Bank of Ceylon building situated on the inner harbour road in Trincomalee.
At 9.30 am Mr Vigneswaran was just about to enter the Bank of Ceylon building when he was shot dead by a person who escaped on a motorbike. Mr Vigneswaran was just selected by TNA as a national member of parliament to replace Mr Joseph Pararajasingam who was murdered on Christmas eve of 2005. The location of the incident (see map) is inside a high security zone. This zone is adjacent to the Sri Lankan Navy camp, located at the Trincomalee harbour, and therefore is subjected to severe security measures. The Bank of Ceylon building is just a few hundred metres from the harbour. The only entrance for civilians into this area is through the Sri Lankan military checkpoint (see map). The assailant could have entered the road only through the military checkpoint 07 April 2006
