In a land where death squads rule diplomatic convoy is unrecognized

Burial site of a body identified by a man arrested and released by SLA

A body, estimated to have been buried three months ago, was dug out from an empty land in Kokuvil in Jaffna and taken to Jaffna teaching hospital for investigation. The location of the body was identified based on the information provided by a man who was arrested and released by the Sri Lankan military.

The atmosphere in Jaffna where “enemies” are hunted and killed by Sri Lankan military death squads, one should not expect people like the man who identified the location of the burial site to come out in the open and say what exactly happened and how he came to have this information.

Ambassadors passage given less priority to military passage in Jaffna

A convoy carrying a team of Ambassadors from several countries who were on fact finding tour to Jaffna was delayed for 20 minutes in Chavakachcheri to allow a military convoy to pass through. This conduct of the military is easy to understand if one has the knowledge that this is the same military that operates death squads and gets away with it.

Civil and diplomatic conduct for the military in Jaffna comes second to ensuring its own protection among a population that wants it out now.

The highways, A9 to Jaffna and A15 to Vaharai remain closed Despite the Co-chairs stating, “We recognize the efforts by government to provide essential supplies themselves and welcome the establishment of the consultative committee on humanitarian assistance that is addressing several humanitarian access issues for international agencies” so far nothing has reached the people in Vaharai or Jaffna through A15 or A9 highways.
