The fate of Baskaran Sutharson of Trincomalee

This story happened today in Trincomalee. Will any international media care to report this case, pointing clearly to the culprits, whom many people are willing to identify? The answer is NO. The reason is that there are no international media in Trincomalee. It will take the international media a few days to get to Trincomalee from Colombo. It is then too late to report on this event given the international standard of “hot” news.

More than 300 Tamil civilians have died in this manner in the Northeast in the last three months, unreported and unnoticed by the international media.

The event

On 25 June, a grenade exploded in Trincomalee around 1.30 pm. The SLA went on rampage beating hundreds of people which has now become the regular ritual of the SLA. On top of this regular ritual, SLA also arrested Baskaran Sutharson (22) of Anpuvalipuram at 3.30 pm. Sutharson was traveling on the road 500 Kms from the location of the grenade explosion.

Sutharsan was then asked by the SLA to show them his home, which Sutharson did. In order to do this the SLA walked with Sutharson a few metres. Many of Sutharson’s friends and neighbours saw this. After looking at Sutharson’s home SLA walked him further to an empty house of a displaced family. He was taken inside.

When Sutharson failed to come out of the house, his family and friends complained to the SLMM. However, SLMM refused to come out to investigate late in the day citing their security as the reason. The family and friends went to the police to complain. Police told them that it is SLA matter and they cannot get involved. Distraught family and friends went home.

Early next morning, 26 June, the family and friends went looking again. Seeing that there was no SLA near the house into which Sutharson was taken, they went inside but Sutharson was not there. On information they received they went a few metres behind the house and found Sutharson’s body. He had very deep cuts on his head and neck. He was still bleeding, suggesting that he had been killed only in the early hours of the morning.

Friends of Sutharson swear that they can identify the SLA men who took Sutharson into the empty house. In fact one of them dared to go to SLA and query about Sutharson. He was told that he too will meet the same fate unless he gets out of the place.

SLMM was informed and they arrived to investigate. People said that when they complained to the SLMM, the SLMM advised them to leave the area. One hundred families have displaced and are staying as refugees in Selvanayakapuram.
