
Five Tamil civilians killed within five hours
Sri Lankan military forces and paramilitary groups are continuing with violence against Tamil civilians, killing five in separate incidents within five hours on Monday, 17 April. Fear is widespread in Batticaloa and Jaffna districts as Tamil civilians remain the target of State violence. In almost all of the incidents, State security and military forces were in close proximity of the killings, and did not take any action.
Chavakachcheri Atputharasa Sureshkumar (16) was killed by an explosion from an unknown source as he was standing outside of his home. The explosion took place near the 52 Division SLA camp in Chavakachcheri on Post Office Road around 9:00 am. Two other civilians Krishnan Thiruchelvam (30) and Sivapalan Thileepan (35), who were severely wounded in the explosion were sent to Jaffna Hospital for treatment and remain in critical condition. Valaichenai Ganapathipillai Koneswaran (24) and Kunapal Suresh (24) were shot dead by gunmen traveling in a van when they were standing outside of Karuvakerni School at 9:45 am. Thenmaradchchi Ramalingam Sakilan (30) a shop owner was shot dead by four gunmen in military uniform in his shop located on A9 Road in Meesalai around 11:30 am. The gunmen, who traveled on motorbikes, entered the shop and opened fire at Sakilan. Witnesses stated that many SLA soldiers were standing on both sides of road where the shooting took place and did not take any action during the incident. Witnesses said the SLA soldiers merely hurried along pedestrians. Santhiveli Easan (24) was inside his home when civilian-clothed gunmen entered his home and shot him dead around 2:30 pm. Witnesses stated that Sri Lankan police were close to the incident during the shooting.
