Body of missing Hindu priest and another body in suspected mass grave
A Hindu priest Venkadakrishnasharma (50) was reported missing in Jaffna from 26 May when he left the Kaithady Pillaiyar temple after a special Pooja. His body was discovered on 7 June by workers who went to mine gravel from the open land along the Kaithady-Kopay bridge (see map). During the exhumation of his body in the presence of the judge, further signs of buried bodies were noticed. So far the body of another man has been exhumed.
The site is 200 metres from the Kopay-Kaithady road and just 200 metres from the SLA checkpoint on the bridge (see map). The leg of Venkadakrishnasharma was severed from his body. He also had serious wounds on his head. The food items used in the special Pooja that the Hindu priest was carrying with him were also found with his body.
Three more bodies in state of decay have also been exhumed. Exhumation is continuing. Judge has ordered the area to be protected suspecting further bodies are buried in the area. The task has been given to the Sri Lankan military police. The big question remains. Can culprits protect evidence?
