The two Heads of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission meet Tamilselvan in Kilinochchi

The outgoing head of SLMM, Ulf Henricsson of Sweden and the new Head of SLMM, Lars Solvberg of Norway, with three other outgoing monitors of SLMM visited Kilinochchi today and met Mr. Tamilselvan at the LTTE political head quarters on 25 August.

Tamilselvan praised the excellent services rendered by the SLMM monitors from Finland, Denmark and Sweden and expressed his gratitude for their services. He added that the services provided by the monitors from Finland, Denmark and Sweden are irreplaceable. Tamilselvan said that it is unfortunate that European Union was mislead by the false propaganda of the Sri Lankan government and took the decision to ban the LTTE. He said that the LTTE is very keen to maintain and further develop the good relationship it has had with Finland, Denmark and Sweden. While expressing regret that the monitors are leaving and he also expressed hope that the European Union will reverse its decision. Tamilselvan presented gifts to the fare welling monitors.

Tamilselvan also pointed to the departing Head of Mission that the Sri Lankan government emboldened by the EU decision has intensified its attacks on the Tamil people. Massacres, disappearances and aerial bombardments have increased sharply after the EU decision he pointed out.

Tamilselvan explained to the visiting SLMM monitors that the Sri Lankan government while claiming to respect the Ceasefire Agreement is acting in complete contravention of it. CFA was intended to bring normalcy to the Tamil people by resettling the internally displaced people back in their homes. In reality more than 200,000 new refugees has been created by the persistent aerial bombing and shelling by the Sri Lankan government. One of its bombs killed 51 school girls.

Tamilselvan said that the LTTE cannot permit this situation to continue.
