SLA and paramilitary’s ‘white van’ abductions hit Jaffna once again
The ‘white van’ abductions of Tamil civilians that took place frequently during the months of December and January are happening in Jaffna once again. More than 10 abductions have been reported in local media recently. A Tamil civilian was recently abducted from his home as Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers stood guard.
Sivasothy Thivyathas (26) was abducted from his home on 10 April at 11.00 pm in Uduvil, Jaffna by attackers who came in a white van and had their faces covered with black cloth. Fifteen men in civilian clothes with their faces covered in black cloth arrived at Thivythas’ home. They entered his home, dragged him from his bed, stripped his clothes off and dragged him outside. Thivyathas began running from the attackers, but the men caught up with him, and then kicked him, severely beat him and shot him. The attackers dragged the bleeding body into the white van and drove away. Thivyathas’ family has not heard about his whereabouts and is still searching for him. Neighbors in the area stated that several Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers were standing near the home when the incident took place. There are blood stains in the yard where he was shot and blood stains leading from that area to where the white van was parked.
