People displace in fear from Mutur in Trincomalee

Thousands of people are displacing from GoSL controlled area to LTTE administered area due to the excesses of the Sri Lankan Armed forces in Mutur. Hundreds of SLA soldiers and home guards, deployed in the Mutur area, following a grenade attack on the SLA soldiers, have begun to harass the civilians.

SLA soldiers are going from home to home in Mutur and are subjecting the houses and occupants to severe checking and interrogation. SLA has threatened the occupants that if they get out of their homes they will be in danger. Panicky civilians are displacing to LTTE administered areas.

More than 500 families have already displaced in fear from Mallikaitivu, Kachchanur and Iruthayapuram which are under GOSL control to Thanganagar in LTTE area. These people are staying at two schools in Thanganagar. At the same time more than 750 families from L.P. region, Kumarapuram and Kiliveddy are displaced to Kiliveddy Mahavidyalayam School.

People displacing from GoSL controlled areas have to pass through military checkpoints. Since people are harassed at these checkpoints, many are traveling through very difficult routes through the jungles to reach LTTE administered areas. SLA is also threatening people who are moving out with many belongings. As a result many are displacing with a minimal amount of clothes and are arriving in LTTE administered areas without their basic necessities.

SLMM has been informed of the threats faced by the people and it has visited the area to observe the situation.
