Jaffna Civil society meets Norwegian Ambassador

Worried civil society members of Jaffna met with the Norwegian Ambassador, Hans Brattskar, in Jaffna on 22 May to raise their concerns about the security situation in the Northeast.

Representatives of the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies, and several other groups raised their concerns on the numerous massacres that took place in Jaffna recently. They also handed a memorandum signed by President S Paramanathan and Secretary A K Sivasubramaniam in which they stated,

“There is a psycho fear for the free movement due to unwanted checks, round ups, and threats. Especially young men and students are being harassed and tortured. Even elderly people, women and young girls are undergoing severe stress. The general opinion of the civil society is that they cannot live under the armed forces of Sri Lanka”.

As the ambassador left, the parents of the eight Hindu temple workers, who were shot and disappeared, from the temple premises, started crying aloud, begging the ambassador to find out about the fate of their children. Ambassador promised to do his best and conveyed his condolences to the distraught parents.

People from Allaipiddy were also there and handed a letter to the Ambassador about the massacre of a family of nine in their village on 13 May.

Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies, later protested to the Norwegian Embassy, about the very short amount of time the Ambassador spent with the civil society in Jaffna. They charged that the ambassador must spend more time with the civil society to gauge the ground situation.
