Four youths abducted from their homes at night by the Sri Lankan military

In a series of abductions from their homes late at night, four youths from four different homes have been taken away by the Sri Lankan military. The families of the youths waited at their respective district courts hoping that they will be brought their and charged. They were all disappointed.

The military has accepted that the youths were arrested by them. Yet, the style of arrest, as will be seen below is more in the style of abductions, causing terror and injury. The failure to bring the youths before the courts and also inform the families of the arrest are evidence of non professional conduct which is more in line with the motive to terrorize the Jaffna population.

Baskaran Prathap, a driver aged 23 was at his home in Inuvil in Jaffna on the night of 1st November. The Sri Lankan military rounded up his home and abducted Prathap. Prathap’s mother Kamalavathy aged 52 was injured by the Sri Lankan military shooting and was admitted to the Tellipali hospital.

Sivananthan Sritharan, a carpenter aged 30, was abducted from his home in Kokuvil in Jaffna the same night in a very similar manner.

Nadarasa Tharmathas, a technical college student aged 20, was abducted the same night from his home in Chunnakam in Jaffna the same night in a very similar manner.

Sivasubramanium Tharmendra, a welder aged 25, was abducted from his home in Jaffna town on the night of 3rd November in a very similar manner.

It is now feared that the military will transfer the youths to Colombo without ever bringing them to the courts in Jaffna. The implications are that with Jaffna isolated from the rest of the island the families of these youths will find it impossible to learn the fate of the youths let alone make contact with them.

Is the military inventing new ways of terrorizing the Jaffna people?
